Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

EUPATORIUM dubium 'Little Joe' PP16122

Plant Common Name

Coastal Plain Joe-Pye weed, Little Joe Joe-Pye weed

General Description

‘Little Joe’ adds color and architecture to the summer garden with its large, dome-shaped clusters of lavender-pink flowers borne on tall, sturdy stems. Selected for its compact growth habit, it is a form of eastern Joe Pye weed, native to moist, coastal areas of the eastern United States. Its burgundy-tinted stems are lined with whorls of pointed, elliptical, dark green foliage. In mid- to late summer, many dark salmon-pink buds give way to dense, rounded clouds of softly-colored flowers, which are beloved by numerous butterflies.

Grow this rewarding perennial in full to part sun and moist, reasonably fertile soil. Although heaviest flowering occurs in full sun settings, ‘Little Joe’ is more tolerant of shade than many other forms of Joe Pye weed. Use it in moist meadows, along stream or pond edges, or in a well-watered mixed border.
