General Description
Upland boneset is a summer-blooming perennial with white flower clusters atop the tall stems. Usually found growing wild in broken woodlands and on hillsides in the eastern United States, it is an uncommon garden plant. The long, tapered green leaves are sparingly arranged in pairs opposite each other on the slightly reddened stems. The leaf margins, or edges, are jaggedly toothed. The small clusters of dainty white flowers emerge from the panicle (branched stems) at the top of the main stem from mid to late summer, and will attract various winged insects for pollination.
Upland boneset should be grown in average garden soils that are fertile, moist and slightly acidic to neutral in pH. Although a moist soil is ideal, it is important to avoid soggy sites. Partial sun to partial shade situations, such as at the edge of a woodland or under the high dappled shade of a large specimen tree is a perfect spot for this perennial. It would make for an architecturally interesting addition to a meadow.
