EUPHORBIA amygdaloides 'Purpurea'

Image of Euphorbia amygdaloides 'Purpurea'

John Rickard

Family

Euphorbiaceae

Botanical Name

EUPHORBIA amygdaloides 'Purpurea'

Plant Common Name

Purple-leaved Woodspurge, Woodspurge

General Description

This striking perennial is a dark-leaved form of wood spurge, an evergreen species native to Europe and Turkey. Its thick, upright, wine-colored stems are thickly encircled with linear leaves which change color as the seasons progress.

In spring, new growth emerges burgundy, then changes to dark green before maturing to smoky purple in summer. The cool temperatures of fall and winter bring even darker tones to the stems and foliage. Brilliant chartreuse flower clusters are displayed profusely in spring. These are actually composed of colorful bracts surrounding small, inconspicuous flowers, and contrast stunningly with the dark leaves.

For best performance, provide this perennial with full sun and well-drained soil of average to modest fertility. Wet, poorly-drained conditions should be avoided. Wood spurge may tend to be short-lived; however, allowing the plants to self-sow will ensure their continued presence in the garden. The cultivar ‘Purpurea’ is a beautiful choice for containers, well-drained mixed borders and rock gardens.
