EUPHORBIA avasmontana

Maureen Gilmer

Family

Euphorbiaceae

Botanical Name

EUPHORBIA avasmontana

Plant Common Name

Slender Candelabra

General Description

One of the more beautiful large Euphorbia, slender candelabra has an exceptional upright form and produces many stems of bright green. In fact, mature wild specimens can produce as many as 50 branched stems. A native of southern Africa, specifically the Auas Mountains of Namibia and along the Orange River of Botswana, it is frost-tender but very tough and drought tolerant.

The upright, bright yellow-green stems of slender candelabra have distinct vertical ribs lined with pairs of dark brown to black spines. Marginally attractive blooms appear in late spring to summer. These are produced in abundance at the stem tips between the spine pairs. Small, green fruits follow.

Slender candelabra grows along rocky hillsides in the wild, so it is well-suited to arid, frost-free, sloped rock gardens where good drainage is assured. In the low desert, protect plants from hot midday sun. This succulent euphorb can also be grown as an indoor container specimen. Be sure to provide it with bright sun and a large container filled with fast-draining medium for cacti.

The cut stems of this Euphorbia emit milky latex which is irritating to the skin.
