General Description

Glacier Blue variegated spurge offers blue-gray foliage edged in creamy white, lending extra visual appeal to its bold, architectural form. A shrubby species native to Portugal and the western Mediterranean region of Europe, 'Glacier Blue' is a more compact form that was a mutation of the popular cultivar 'Tasmanian Tiger' found in 2004.

The narrow, linear leaves of this perennial densely encircle thick, upright stems, and remain evergreen to semi-evergreen throughout winter. Airy, rounded flower clusters are displayed on the ends of the tall stems in spring. These are composed of light bluish-green bracts (modified leaves) that are white-striped surrounding small, less conspicuous, pale yellow flowers.

Provide 'Glacier Blue' with full sun and very well-drained soil of average to modest fertility. Wet or poorly-drained conditions should be avoided. Stems may be cut to the ground immediately after flowering to rejuvenate new foliage. Use this plant in containers or as a specimen in rock gardens or well-drained mixed borders. Its blue foliage really shines when combined with that of more richly-colored perennials as well as a backdrop for daffodil and tulip blossoms.
