Family

Euphorbiaceae

Botanical Name

EUPHORBIA polychroma

Plant Common Name

Spurge

General Description

Native to Europe and Turkey, cushion spurge is notable for its breathtaking spring to early summer display of brilliant yellow-green flowers. This beautiful herbaceous perennial forms a neat, rounded mound of sturdy stems which are densely encircled with small, oval, deep green leaves. The softly-textured foliage may develop attractive tints of red and orange in fall. Bright yellow flower clusters appear at the ends of the stems in spring, and remain showy well into summer. These are actually composed of colorful bracts surrounding small, less conspicuous flowers.

Cushion spurge thrives in full sun and well-drained, reasonably fertile soil which receives average moisture. It will self-sow about the garden if permitted, however, unwanted plants are easily removed. It is smashing when planted in small groups among other spring- to early summer-flowering perennials such as Siberian iris, meadow sage, blue false indigo, or border pinks.
