Botanical Name

EUPHORBIA x martini

Plant Common Name

Martin's Spurge

General Description

Martin’s Spurge is a hybrid between the European native Euphorbia amygdaloides and the Mediterranean Euphorbia characias. It is a tender, evergreen, spurge with a clumping, upright habit and lance-shaped leaves with the pointed ends attached to the plant. The leaves are green often with red, pink or purple undertones as are the plant stems. Late winter through summer flowers appear well above the foliage in dense spikes and have circular apple to lime green bracts (modified leaves) surrounding small red to brown star-like nectar glands.

Martin’s Spurge is a tough plant. It grows well in just about any soil as long as it is well-drained. Full sun is preferred, but will take some shade. It is beautiful in containers which are best in colder zones, but spreads to form tidy mounds in beds, boarders and as edging in warmer locations. Martin’s Spurge is drought, deer and rabbit resistant. Use in masses in the garden and cut a few of the unusual flowers heads for interesting arrangements.
