Family

Asteraceae

Botanical Name

EURYOPS chrysanthemoides

Plant Common Name

African Bush Daisy, Golden Daisy Bush

General Description

African bush daisy is a medium-sized tender shrub with evergreen foliage and bright yellow daisy flowers. From the Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa, it grows naturally in coarse, fast-draining soil with high nutrient content. The plants naturally exist on open, rocky seaside areas, so they are well-adapted to drought and aerosol salt.

The leaves are a lush, glossy and medium green. Each has seven to nine lobes, which make them look like tiny oak leaves. The yellow daisy flowers do not close at night and occur year-round but are most prolific from autumn to spring. They are held on long, wiry stems above the leaves and attract lots of insect pollinators, such as bees, beetles, wasps and butterflies. The blooms are followed by heads filled with black seeds that are eaten by seedeating birds. Regular deadheading will encourage heavier flowering.

Full sun and average to poor, well-drained soil is preferred. It appreciates even moisture but is intolerant of saturated soil. Light pruning can be done in late winter if needed. African bush daisy is best planted as a seaside hedge, in a mixed border, or a large patio container. It will naturalize easily and is considered invasive in some regions, so consult with a local extension agent about the ecological dangers of planting this species in your area.
