Festuca 'Southern Gold Blend'
Tall Fescue
Fescue ‘Southern Gold’ is a tall fescue turfgrass seed blend developed with varieties to impart heat, drought, insect and brown patch disease resistance for the warmer areas of the transition zone. The tall fescue species are native to Europe. Tall fescue is very popular turf due to good color in the spring and fall and easy of establishment from seed. Though it is a cool-season turf, it is best used in the warmer areas of transition zones and is commonly used to over-seed warm season grasses in this area. Tall Fescue is a bunch grass, perennial and deep-rooted. The bunching habit means tall fescue may need to be re-seeded every few years to maintain density.
Tall fescue is adapted to fine range of soil conditions; however it prefers well-drained, rich, organic soil with some clay. Sow tall fescue seeds in the fall for best performance. Mow it high, but not too high and irrigate thoroughly and deeply, and not again until the turf indicates it needs it. Fescue ‘Southern Gold’ like many transition zone seed blends will vary in content from year to year; however, it is mostly composed of the ‘Endeavor,’ ‘Tarheel’ and ‘Wolfpack’ varieties of tall fescue.
