FILIPENDULA palmata 'Rosea'

Image of Filipendula palmata 'Rosea'

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

FILIPENDULA palmata 'Rosea'

Plant Common Name

Dwarf Meadowsweet, Siberian Meadowsweet

General Description

This pink-flowered form of Siberian meadowsweet is often confused with Filipendula rubra, but its sprays of fluffy pink flowers are smaller, finer and looser and its palmate leaves have fluffy white hairs beneath.

This tall, clump-forming perennial is most commonly grown for its impressive, deeply lobed leaves rather than its relatively small stems of fluffy white flowers. Filipendula palmata is native to Russia, China and North Korea, where it can be growing in moist soils along sunny slopes, forest edges and grassy fields.

The dark green, almost maple-like leaves of this hardy plant have a variable number of lobes—the upper leaves have five to nine and lower three to five. The leaves are also distinguished by the dense, fuzzy, white hairs on their undersides. In early summer, branched clusters of lightly scented, fuzzy, white flowers are produced. Bees and butterflies love the short-lived blooms. Once spent, cut the old flowers back to keep the foliage looking nice.

Plant this deciduous perennial in full to partial sun. Ensure it has moist, fertile soil for best performance and flowering. Its spent foliage should be cut back in fall after a couple of hard frosts. This is the best time to divide it too. The texturally bold, lustrous foliage of Siberian meadowsweet adds texture to large gardens and borders and compliments more brightly colored annuals and perennials for sun.
