Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

FRAGARIA x ananassa 'Parker Earle'

Plant Common Name

Garden Strawberry, Strawberry

General Description

Garden strawberries are hybrid perennials prized for their sweet, aromatic red fruit. Popular in the late nineteenth century but nearly extinct in cultivation today, the strawberry cultivar 'Parker Earle' originated in Denison, Texas, around 1886. This "June-bearing" variety produces medium to large, bright-red berries that ripen in late spring and early summer, toward the end of the spring strawberry season.

Like most garden strawberries, 'Parker Earle' spreads by runners to form expanding mats of three-lobed leaves. Round, white, five- to seven-petaled flowers open in spring from buds initiated the previous fall. The conical, often blunt-tipped berries have medium-firm, juicy, pale-red flesh and a full, slightly tart flavor.

Garden strawberries thrive in full sun and moderately fertile, moist, acidic to neutral soil. They are good choices for culinary gardens, containers, or "strawberry towers." They are vulnerable to numerous pests and diseases, which should be monitored and controlled if necessary.
