Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

FRAGARIA x ananassa 'Pocomoke'

Plant Common Name

Garden Strawberry, Strawberry

General Description

Garden strawberries are hybrid perennials prized for their sweet, aromatic red fruit. Rarely grown today, 'Pocomoke' was widely cultivated in the Midwest United States in the early twentieth century, where it was known as 'Gibson'. This "June-bearing" strawberry originated in Pittsville, Maryland, around 1900.

Like most garden strawberries, 'Pocomoke' spreads by runners to form expanding mats of dark green, three-parted leaves. Round, white, seven- to nine-petaled flowers open in spring from buds initiated the previous fall. The medium to large, conical, bright crimson berries ripen in late spring and early summer, midway in the spring strawberry season. The very firm, mild-flavored, slightly tart berries were valued for their suitability for shipping.

Garden strawberries thrive in full sun and moist, fertile, acidic to neutral soil. They are good choices for culinary gardens, containers, or "strawberry towers." They are vulnerable to numerous pests and diseases, which should be monitored and controlled if necessary. This variety is susceptible to mildew and leaf-spot.
