Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

FRAGARIA x ananassa 'Sweet Charlie'

Plant Common Name

Garden Strawberry, Strawberry, Sweet Charlie Strawberry

General Description

Garden strawberries are low-growing hybrid perennials prized for their sweet, aromatic red fruit. A "cool-season" strawberry for areas with mild humid winters, 'Sweet Charlie' is a 1992 University of Florida introduction that resists fungal diseases and that flowers and fruits in winter.

This cultivar bears three-lobed leaves in clumps that form offsets via trailing stolons. When days are short and temperatures moderate, plants produce round white five-petaled flowers, followed by an abundance of large, bright red strawberries. The fruits keep well in cool conditions but are poor keepers when warm. Unlike most "short-day" strawberries, 'Sweet Charlie' flowers and fruits in fall and winter rather than delaying bloom until spring. Fruiting peaks from late fall to early winter, relatively early in the Florida strawberry season.

One of the most important strawberries developed for Florida growers, 'Sweet Charlie' thrives in full sun and moderately fertile, moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Remove older "mother" plants in spring or after plants bloom, leaving offsets to replace them. Garden strawberries are good choices for culinary gardens, containers, or "strawberry towers." This variety is well suited for small-scale growing for farm stands and local markets. Strawberries are vulnerable to numerous pests and diseases, which should be monitored and controlled if necessary.
