Garden strawberries are hybrid perennials prized for their sweet, aromatic red fruit. The most widely grown strawberry in the United States in the mid-nineteenth century, 'Wilson' originated in Albany, New York, around 1851. This heirloom "June-bearing" variety is rarely if ever cultivated today.
Like most garden strawberries, 'Wilson' spreads by runners to form expanding mats of three-lobed leaves. Round, white, five- to nine-petaled flowers open in spring from buds initiated the previous fall. The medium-sized, plump, conical berries ripen to dark red in late spring, early to midway in the spring strawberry season. The firm-fleshed, flavorful fruits are excellent for freezing or fresh eating.
Garden strawberries thrive in full sun and moist, acidic to neutral soil. They are good choices for culinary gardens, containers, or "strawberry towers." They are vulnerable to numerous pests and diseases, which should be monitored and controlled if necessary. This variety does best in highly fertile soil.
