Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

FRITILLARIA raddeana

Plant Common Name

Fritillary

General Description

A close relative of crown imperial (Fritillaria imperialis), this large bulbous perennial bears showy clusters of pale yellow flowers in spring. It is native to northern Iran and Turkmenistan.

The tall, leafy, purple-flushed stems of Fritillaria raddeana arise from large, fleshy bulbs in late winter or early spring. Each stem bears several well-spaced whorls of glossy, medium-green, lance-shaped leaves, and a terminal cluster of nodding, funnel-shaped flowers. The pale yellow, green-tinged, burgundy-flushed blooms open in early- to mid-spring. An erect crest of lance-shaped, leaf-like bracts rises above the flowers. Large ovoid seedpods develop after the blooms fade. Plants die back to the bulb in early summer. All parts of this fritillaria emit a musky, skunk-like scent.

Grow this hardy bulb in ample sun and moderately fertile soil. It requires relatively dry soil during its summer to early fall dormant season. This perennial bulb does poorly in areas with warm winters or sultry summers. In hot arid climes it benefits from afternoon shade. Use this picturesque fritillaria in a sunny mixed border or large rock garden.
