Asteraceae

Botanical Name

GAILLARDIA x grandiflora 'Burgunder'

Plant Common Name

Burgundy Blanketflower, Perennial Blanketflower

General Description

Commonly known as blanketflower, Gaillardia x grandiflora is a hybrid of the North American natives Gaillardia aristata and Gaillardia pulchella. It is a superior, heat-loving, herbaceous perennial which blooms from late spring until fall. Gaillardia 'Burgunder' features showy daisy-like flowers with deep, wine-red petals surrounding a maroon to green central cone. The flowers are borne on medium stems above mounds of light-green, hairy foliage.

Blanketflower is a short-lived, drought-tolerant perennial which prefers full sun and good drainage. For best bloom and appearance, spent flowers should be deadheaded. Cut the entire plant back to a few inches in early fall to encourage new, hardy growth. 'Burgunder' is ideal for informal perennial borders, butterfly gardens, seaside landscapes and for cutting.
