Gaillardia x grandiflora
Perennial Blanketflower
Commonly known as blanketflower, Gaillardia x grandiflora is a hybrid of the North American natives Gaillardia aristata and Gaillardia pulchella. This vigorous, long-blooming, hardy perennial is both heat-loving and drought tolerant. Plants produce mounds of soft green, slightly hairy foliage in spring. By early summer they begin to produce daisy-like flowers in fiery tones of orange-red with yellow tips. These have darker-colored centers and are attractive to butterflies. Regular deadheading will encourage fresh blooms from summer into late fall.
Blanketflower grows best in full sun and average soil with good drainage. This tough perennial is ideal for mixed sunny borders, butterfly gardens, and for cutting. There are many selections available including the dwarf 'Goblin' and bright orange and gold-flowered ‘Oranges and Lemons.’
