GALANTHUS cilicicus

Family

Amaryllidaceae

Botanical Name

GALANTHUS cilicicus

Plant Common Name

Autumn Snowdrop, Early Snowdrop

General Description

Rare both in the wild and in gardens, this small bulbous perennial from southern Turkey is notable for its fall to winter bloom period. Nodding from a slender arching stem ("pedicel") atop an ankle-high scape, the white, solitary, honey-scented flower has six petal-like segments in two whorls. The three spoon-shaped outer segments draw back in warm weather to reveal the three much smaller inner segments, which form a tube-like structure. The inner segments have notched tips with a green v-shaped "mustache." The bulb slowly offsets to produce a multi-flowered clump. The narrowly lance-shaped gray-green leaves emerge before the flowers, develop to full length during and after bloom, and neatly fade away in spring.

This relatively weak-growing snowdrop requires well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil protected from summer dampness. Plant the bulbs in late summer at a depth of two to three times their height. They are best under deciduous trees where they receive full sun while in bloom but partial shade later on. They require some chill in winter to grow and flower well. This snowdrop is perfect for a rock garden, trough, or alpine house. It is an ideal subject for fanciers of the genus Galanthus. All parts of this plant contain compounds that make them unpalatable to herbivores.
