Gardenia jasminoides 'Radicans'
Dwarf Gardenia, Gardenia
Dwarf Gardenia boasts the famously fragrant white flowers of the common gardenia but is better used as a groundcover and has smaller, finely-textured leaves. This China native has small double white flowers in the summertime.
Acidic, moist soils with good drainage with incorporated organic matter are this plant's needs. It should also be provided with full to part sun and good air circulation. This cultivar should be given a bit more protection from cold temperatures and winter winds in USDA zone 7. In clay soils, it seems to be fairly drought tolerant when established and not in a full sun exposure. 'Radicans Variegata' differs only in that the small leaves are lighter green in color with white markings. Whether used as a specimen plant, or a sweeping groundcover, in containers or in the front of a shrub border, dwarf gardenia is surely one plant to include in the garden.
