Family

Rutaceae

Botanical Name

GEIJERA parviflora

Plant Common Name

Australian Willow, Wilga

General Description

Finely textured leaves and a slightly weeping habit make this an elegant tree for hot, dry climates. A small, slow-growing, broadleaf evergreen from eastern Australia, it has ascending, arching central branches and pendulous outer branches, the whole forming a rounded crown. Branching begins low on the trunk. The aromatic, willowy, narrowly lance shaped leaves dangle gracefully from the branches. They are shiny dark green in partially shaded sites, and somewhat paler in sunny locations. This tree produces inconspicuous but highly fragrant clusters of small ivory colored flowers in late winter and spring and sometimes also in fall. The tiny globular fruits that follow the flowers pose no litter problems.

This lovely tree does well in full to partial sun and well drained, acidic to alkaline soil. Its roots are deep and noninvasive. Prune its ground-sweeping outer branches to expose the handsome gray trunk, or leave them unpruned for screening purposes. This is an excellent choice for areas where heat, wind and drought are challenging.
