General Description

The richly dark-foliaged ‘Cheryl's Shadow’ produces small light pink flowers in summertime. This chance seedling was discoverd in 1999 in Arroyo Grande, California and then selected and named by David Fross.

This exceptional Geranium is one of the best of all dark leaf cranesbills. It maintains a low, mounding habit and has dark purple to burgnudy-chocolate colored leaves that are round but edged ion wavy scallops. From late spring to fall, it produces lovely pale pink flowers low among the pinkish leaf stems. These are followed by dry fruits that are shaped like bird's beaks. The seeds within are rarely viable, so it does not self-sow freely.

Full sun and average garden soil with even moisture are suitable for 'Cheryl's Shadow'. It is tolerant of alkaline and clay soils but is best in an organic-rich mixture. This is one of the few geraniums that can take the heat when summers heat up. It will even tolerate brief periods of drought. Mixed perennial borders and cottage gardens are perfect for this pretty garden flower. It also looks becoming spilling over the edges of stone walkways or low retaining walls contrasting other plants that are green, chartreuse or variagated in foliage.
