GERANIUM cinereum

James H. Schutte

Family

Geraniaceae

Botanical Name

GERANIUM cinereum

Plant Common Name

Ashy Cranesbill

General Description

The hardy Ashy Cranesbill is a low-growing perennial native to the Pyrenees Mountains, which divide Spain and France. It is a very pretty mound-forming perennial that offers five-petaled purple or lavender-pink flowers from late spring to early summer.

The leaves of this hardy plant are palm-shaped, deeply lobed and soft gray-green. They form a nice mound in spring. Its blooms are cup-shaped and produced just above the foliage singly or in loose groups of three or four. They are commonly pink with purple veining and dark eyes, though some cultivars have purple or deeper pink flowers. The unique dry fruits look like long beaks, which is where the common name "cranesbill" came from.

Grow this tough semi-evergreen plant in full to partial sun. Afternoon shade is appreciated in areas where summers are hot, but bright light is necessary for strong blooming. Evenly moist soil promotes vigor, but this geranium will tolerate short periods of drought. It is a pretty alpine that looks great in rock gardens and border edges. It is also deer and rabbit resistant.
