GERANIUM clarkei 'Kashmir White'

James H. Schutte

Family

Geraniaceae

Botanical Name

GERANIUM clarkei 'Kashmir White'

Plant Common Name

Clark's Cranesbill, Kashmir White Cranesbill

General Description

The delicate, white flowers of 'Kashmir White' rise above a mass of coarse, ferny green leaves. In early summer, it becomes blanketed with blooms. This mound-forming herbaceous perennial spreads by rhizomes and forms a substantial clump over time. Geranium clarkei originates from the intermountain meadows of the Kashmir region, which includes Pakistan, Nepal, China and India.

Its ferny leaves are long-stemmed, rounded, dark green and have seven prominent lobes with jagged edges. In late spring and early summer, tall branched stems hold the pretty five-petaled flowers of white with pink veins. The entire plant is fully clothed in blossoms at the height of the blooming season, which is usually early summer. The dry, brown fruits that follow the flowers are shaped like bird's beaks and filled with seeds that fall to the ground and readily germinate.

Grow Clark's cranesbill in full or partial sun and any average garden soil that is well-drained. In regions where summers are very hot, it may grow best in partial sun. After flowering, cut back the flower stems to encourage a second flush of blooms in late summer. Plant this perennial in mixed borders, sun pockets in a woodland garden, or massed as an herbaceous groundcover. This plant self-sows, though the seedlings are not true to parent and are often purple flowered.
