James H. Schutte

Family

Geraniaceae

Botanical Name

GERANIUM 'Johnson's Blue'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Cranesbill, Johnson's Blue' Geranium

General Description

This old-fashioned hardy geranium is a garden classic. It forms large, branching mounds of finely textured leaves and produces cool blue-violet flowers from early to midsummer. It was first introduced around 1950 and has remained popular because it is pretty, vigorous and blooms for a long time.

The medium green leaves of this hardy perennial are fine-textured, palmate, acutely lobed and have toothed edges. In fall, they turn shades of yellow and red. From early to midsummer, 'Johnson's Blue' becomes covered with five-petaled, violet-blue flowers. These are followed by dry fruits that are shaped like bird's beaks. The seeds within are rarely viable, so it does not self-sow freely. After flowering, cut the old stems back to encourage a flush of fresh new growth.

Grow this hardy geranium in full sun and average garden soil with even moisture and average drainage. It is even tolerant of alkaline and clay soils. Plants may need staking because their stems can be upright and leggy—particularly if grown in partial sun. When summers heat up the plants can become stressed and should be supplied with regular water. This sweet perennial is ideal for mixed perennial borders and cottage gardens.
