Family
Geraniaceae
Botanical Name
Geranium magniflorum(LA VETA LACE®)
Plant Common Name
Cape Cranesbill
General Description
Native to the alpine heights of South Africa's Drakensberg Mountains, Cape cranesbill takes well to gardens in the Rocky Mountains and other relatively arid upland regions. Its cultivar La Veta Lace® has finely dissected leaves that resemble parsley foliage.
This evergreen perennial forms low, slowly spreading mounds of ferny, deeply lobed, light green leaves. The foliage becomes purple-tinged in winter. Clusters of purple-pink, saucer-shaped, five-petaled flowers arise on compact stems in spring, continuing into summer. Beaked seed capsules follow the flowers, ejecting their seeds when ripe. Self-sowing may occur.
This hardy perennial thrives in sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It fares poorly in hot, damp conditions. It makes an ideal subject for rock gardens, edging, and wall plantings in high-altitude gardens.
