General Description

The upward-faced blossoms and beautiful mounding ‘Sabani Blue' was bred by Alan Bremner of Scotland, selected in 1999 and later introduced globally by PlantHavens, Inc. One parent plant of this hybrid was the summer-deciduous Geranium libani.

This handsome cranesbill maintains a low, mounding habit and has light green, palmate leaves that are deeply divided. From midspring to summer, it produces lovely, upward-facing light lavender-blue flowers with thin purple veins and creamy white centers These are followed by dry fruits that are shaped like bird's beaks. The seeds within are rarely viable, so it does not self-sow freely.

Full sun and average garden soil with even moisture are suitable for this hardy geranium. It is tolerant of alkaline and clay soils although best with organic matter incorporated. This perennial will retain its leaves in summer and if foliage or flowering subsides, 'Sabani Blue' should be cut back and allowed to rejuvenate. It will even tolerate brief periods of drought. Mixed perennial borders, dappled woodlands and cottage gardens are perfect for this pretty garden flower. It also looks becoming spilling over the edges of stone walkways or low retaining walls or as a massed groundcover.
