Family

Geraniaceae

Botanical Name

GERANIUM sanguineum

Plant Common Name

Blood Cranesbill, Blood Red Cranesbill

General Description

Toughness, longevity, attractive foliage, and a lengthy blooming season are among the many merits of this low-growing herbaceous perennial from Europe and northern Turkey. Five-petaled, saucer shaped, magenta (or pink or white) flowers appear in quantity in spring, recurring in lesser numbers until early fall. The dainty, deeply lobed leaves – borne on branching, usually sprawling stems – are also attractive, often turning bright colors in fall. The airy, open plants spread slowly by short fleshy underground rhizomes. Numerous selections are available, including variety striatum – with pale pink, purple-veined flowers on prostrate stems – and the white-flowered, rangy 'Album'.

This beautiful, drought-tolerant perennial does best in fertile well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. It is ideal for embankments, walls, rock gardens, woodland edges, and other relatively dry, sunny sites. Self-sowing often occurs, but rarely in abundance.
