General Description

This short cranesbill dazzles with vibrant magenta flowers with black centers in late spring and early summer. A low-growing evergreen perennial with deep-hued gray-green foliage, it is native to northeastern Turkey and the Balkan states.

The leaves of this vigorous plant are deeply lobed and deep, dark gray-green, forming a nice mound. In late spring and early summer, stems rise above the foliage and hold small clusters of bright magenta flowers with dark red veins and black centers. The dry seeds look like long bird beaks.

Grow Geranium subcaulescens in full to partial sun. Afternoon shade is beneficial in areas with hot summers, but such heat shorts the lifespan of this perennial. Evenly moist soil promotes vigor and it tolerates short periods of drought. This is a pretty alpine that looks great in rock gardens and border edges. It is also deer and rabbit resistant. Selection 'Giuseppii' has grayer foliage and flowers with a pale center.
