GERANIUM 'Tiny Monster'

Image of Geranium 'Tiny Monster'

Family

Geraniaceae

Botanical Name

GERANIUM 'Tiny Monster'

Plant Common Name

Hybrid Cranesbill, Tiny Monster Cranesbill

General Description

Low-growing and lovely, this vigorous spreading perennial is ideal for rock gardens and may even be planted as an herbaceous groundcover. Its ornate, ferny, green leaves appear in neat spreading mounds that become covered with vibrant rosy purple flowers from late spring to summer. This hybrid is also sterile, so it does not self-sow like many other garden geraniums.

The spreading stems of ‘Tiny Monster’ take root where they touch the soil, so it is best planted where it can roam freely and weave between other sun-loving perennials. Its five-petaled, rose-purple flowers literally glow and are marked by darker veins that radiate from the center of each bloom. In hot summer weather the bright green foliage may begin to look ratty. If this happens, trim back the old to allow a flush of new leaves and to coax it to rebloom in fall. When the fall nights start to get chilly its foliage will turn shades of purple and bronze.

Grow 'Tiny Monster' in full to partial sun and fertile, garden soil with even moisture and good drainage. It is tolerant of alkaline soils and light drought. It is best placed in sunny perennial gardens, rock gardens or planted in masses as an herbaceous groundcover.
