General Description

Compact and evergreen, the hardy cranesbill is a low herbaceous perennial that slowly spreads by underground shoots, or runners. This hybrid between dalmatian and bigroot cranesbill, is botanically named after Cambridge, England. In spring and early summer it bears pink or white cup-like flowers above fragrant, lobed, glossy green leaves. No seeds are produced. The deeply lobed, frilly leaves often turn burgundy-red in fall.

A tough, deer and rabbit-resistant plant, hardy cranesbill grows best in full to partial sun and well-drained soil. It makes a great groundcover or border plant for the cottage or woodland garden or in drifts in an open meadow. Three notable cultivars include 'Cambridge', which is very low-growing and has mauve-pink blossoms, 'Karmina', which has dark pink flowers, and the pinkish white flowered 'Biokovo.'
