GERANIUM x magnificum

Image of Geranium x magnificum

James H. Schutte

Family

Geraniaceae

Botanical Name

GERANIUM x magnificum

Plant Common Name

Purple Cranesbill

General Description

This fuzzy-leaved cranesbill has the deeply-lobed foliage and the cerulean blooms one would expect from a hybrid of two jagged-leaved, violet-blue-flowered geraniums. The abundant blossoms come in one flush in summer and produce no seeds. This showy cranesbill was developed from a cross between Geranium ibericum and Geranium platypetalum, two European natives.

Each densely hairy, mid-green leaf is divided into seven to nine lobes and is further edged with teeth. Knee-high stems rise from the thick clump of basal leaves in early or midsummer and bear clusters of round, five-petaled, violet-blue, purple-veined flowers at their tips. The leaves turn yellow and burgundy tones in fall.

Grow purple geranium in full to partial sun in any average garden soil that is neither bone dry nor soggy. The flower stems should be staked to prevent flopping in rains and wind. Cut plants back after blooming to force fresh new growth. The sterile plants must be divided for increase. Use this lovely perennial in borders and naturalistic plantings. Interplanting it with longer-blooming plants is best as this hybrid cranesbill flowers only briefly.
