General Description

A vigorous hybrid of two European species of geranium (Geranium endressii and Geranium versicolor), this hardy perennial with scallop and lobed, slightly shiny, light green leaves displays rose-pink flowers in profusion.

The leaves are broad but with about five deeply cut lobes, each with further division, teeth and veins. Colored light green to gray-green, the foliage arises in a clump from the underground stem, or rhizome. From late spring to early autumn, tall stems with loose clusters of pink flowers appear. Each flower is broad and funnel-shaped with darker pink veins and notched petals. The seeds, which are borne in huge quantities, are shaped like a bird's beak.

Hybrid cranesbill grows well in sun or part shade in all but wet soils. It hot summer areas partial shade is recommended. Also consider staking flower stems as rain and wind will beat them down. It makes a good large-scale groundcover in the light shade under open shrubs such as old roses, or as a clumped accent in a bed or border. It seeds profusely and offspring plants often have less robust flowers. Cut it back hard after flowering to encourage new growth or to simply prevent seeding.
