GEUM 'Borisii'

Image of Geum 'Borisii'

Yoder Brothers

Family

Rosaceae

Botanical Name

GEUM 'Borisii'

Plant Common Name

Avens, Scarlet Avens

General Description

The plants labeled under Geum 'Borisii' are quite variable, but generally speaking they are compact, clump-forming perennials that offer pretty orange-red, semi-double blooms from late spring to midsummer. All are hybrids of the Asian native, G. coccinium. Their flowers rise from tall, well-branched, wiry stems above low mounds of deeply toothed, lobed, scallop-shaped leaves with a pleated texture. The foliage is evergreen in all but the coldest of winters, and the blooms are followed by attractive fluffy seed heads.

Avens grows best in full sun or partial sun with some afternoon shade. It manages well in average garden loam with ample drainage. Plants can be short-lived if subjected to cold, wet soil conditions in winter. Healthy clumps should be divided every three to four years. Generally easy to grow, this Geum is grown for its lovely, old-fashioned blooms, so it is a great candidate for cottage gardens or any informal perennials border. Its flowers also compliment garden fresh flower arrangements.
