General Description

Geum is a diverse genus which can be found across the globe from the Americas to Europe, Africa and even New Zealand. Geums inhabit a wide range of habitats such as dry open fields, bogs and alpine regions. Some of the most popular garden varieties are hybrids of these precocious wildflowers.

Fireball avens is a hybrid of G. chiloense selected for its abundance of blooms. A clump-forming perennial, its low mound of woolly, deep green, pinnate leaves are evergreen except in the coldest of winters. Arising in late spring into summer, 'Fireball' bears semi-double yellow-orange flowers edged bright red. These upward facing bloom are held well above the foliage on well-branched wiry stems. They are followed by attractive fluffy seed heads.

Avens grow best in full sun and well-drained garden loam. Their vigor is best maintained by dividing every 3-4 years. Wet or boggy winter soils are not well tolerated. Generally easy to grow, fireball avens are often planted for their blooms in perennial borders and rock gardens but their foliage also makes an attractive ground cover for small areas.
