General Description

Slowly sprawling into a wide, gently mounded mass, Tampa mock vervain's rosy pink flowers occur nearly year 'round but most prolificly in spring. A short-lived perennial that readily sows itself, it is an evergreen that may also be used as an annual in regions that have mild winters with only the lightest of frosts. It is native to (and endangered in) the moist sunny woodlands of coastal southern Florida in the United States.

The jagged-edged, oval leaves are dark green and slightly rough to the touch. Most notably in spring, but often year 'round, flattened clusters of rose-pink flowers dot the plant, attracting butterflies.

Grow Tampa mock vervain in hot, full to partial sun exposures in a moist, well-draining soil. It has some drought tolerance, mainly once established, but growth can suffer if soil is too dry. It will reseed itself nearby, making it a perfect low groundcover perennial. The only possible maintenance would be to occasionally pull out very old, waning plants that have flowered and set seed to detriment. It may also be used in roadside medians and verges, containers, and hanging baskets.
