Botanical Name

HAKONECHLOA macra 'Aureola'

Plant Common Name

Golden Japanese Forest Grass, Hakone Grass

General Description

Few grasses have the elegant beauty of golden Japanese forest grass and even fewer are well adapted to shade. This clump-forming, variegated grass is slow-growing but develops a sweeping, graceful habit over time. Hakonechloa macra originates from the moist fertile forests of Japan where is can be found growing among rocks and other understory perennials as though strategically planted.

This is a fully deciduous grass that has broad blades with golden edges and bright green stripes down the central veins. The leaves turn reddish hues in the autumn for added appeal. The old brown leaves should be cut back in fall or spring to allow the fresh foliage to look its best each season.

Hakonechloa macra performs best in partial shade and moist but well-drained soil that is fertile. Established plants require little care, but may eventually need to be divided. This lovely woodland grass will lighten up shady garden spots. It looks especially lovely cascading along the front of a border where it can cascade into a path. Plant it in masses for big impact or weave it between other perennials for shade like ferns, hostas and sedges.
