Family

Araliaceae

Botanical Name

HEDERA helix 'Thorndale'

Plant Common Name

English Ivy, Thorndale English Ivy

General Description

Thorndale English ivy, also known as 'Sub-Zero', is an especially hardy cultivar, an evergreen vine that attaches itself by aerial rootlets to masonry walls and other surfaces. 'Thorndale' has large, glossy, dark green, heart-shaped leaves that are broader than they are long and have pale green or white veins in winter. Greenish yellow flowers occur by late summer followed by black, berry-like fruits that are favored by birds.

English ivy is generally easy to grow in sun or shade though partial shade is recommended in hot climates. It does best in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. This vine is grown primarily for its lush foliage, which forms a cool, green cover on walls or ground. It thrives in containers and hanging baskets, and many varieties are useful in topiary.
