Annual Sunflower
The big, bold blooms of sunflowers makes them one of the most cheerful and fun annuals for the garden. Sun loving and easy to grow, they are native throughout the whole of North America down to Central America. Sunflower ‘Ballad’ is a dwarf selection. The plants are branched with large, heart-shaped leaves that are rough and slightly hairy. The summer, daisy-like flowers are small and yellow with brown centers. Flowers may be forced through out the year in warm, frost-free zones. Ballad does not produce pollen
Sunflowers are outstanding plants for wildlife. Many birds and mammals eat their oil-rich, tasty seeds as do we. Sunflower is the largest crop plant in the daisy family and is raised for its valuable cooking oil and nutritious seeds.
Grow sunflowers in full sun and average soil with good drainage. They make superb additions to flower or vegetable gardens. Children also love them because they are fun to plant and grow.
Sunflowers emit a substance from their roots and germinating seeds that inhibits the germination of other seeds around them.
