Helianthus x multiflorus 'Anemoniflorus Flore Pleno'
Many-flowered Sunflower
Lots of fully double golden daisies cover this vigorous garden favorite in late summer. The many-flowered sunflower is a naturally occurring hybrid cross between the annual sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and perennial thinleaf sunflower (Helianthus decapetalus). It has been highly cultivated and there are lots of garden varieties to choose from. The clump-forming plants are moderately tall and long-blooming.
The rough-textured leaves or many-flowered sunflower are medium to dark green, broad and pointed. Flowering occurs from midsummer to early fall. The fully double flowers of 'Anemoniflorus Flore Pleno' look almost like golden Chrysanthemum flowers. Bees and butterflies love the fresh flowers.
Full to partial sun is required for good health and flowering, but this tough, adaptable plant tolerates a wide variety of well-drained soil types. In poorer, rockier soils the plants tend be sturdier and require less staking. Established specimens will even withstand periods of drought. This sunflower is great for wildlife; its flowers are highly attractive to butterflies, and its seeds are favored by seed-eating birds. Sunny perennial gardens of all kinds will benefit from this effortless garden flower. Its flowers are also great for cutting and have a long vase-life.
