HELLEBORUS (Sunshine Strain)

Image of Helleborus (Sunshine Strain)

Maureen Gilmer

Family

Ranunculaceae

Botanical Name

HELLEBORUS( Sunshine Strain)

Plant Common Name

Hellebore, Sunshine Hellebore

General Description

A colorful strain of seed-grown hellebores developed by Sunshine Farm and Gardens of Renick, West Virginia, these hybrids of Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis) make outstanding additions to the shade garden. From winter into spring they bear buttercup-shaped flowers on sturdy stems above substantial clumps of shiny, leathery, jaggedly hand-shaped evergreen leaves. The fresh lime-green new leaves appear with the blooms. Flower colors include pink, red, maroon, pale yellow, pale green, and white, sometimes with contrasting speckles, halos, or centers.

Hellebores prefer a rich, loamy, neutral to alkaline soil, and some protection from sun and drying winds. They often self-sow to form large colonies. Combine them shade-loving bulbs, evergreen ferns, perennials and shrubs. Unlike many plants that bloom at this time of year, deer don't bother them.
