Helping You Become a More Successful Gardener
HELLEBORUS x hybridus 'Red Lady'( LADY SERIES)
Hybrid Lenten Rose
A colorful strain of hellebores developed by Gisela Schmiemann of Cologne, Germany, these seed-grown hybrids of Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis) make outstanding additions to the shade garden. From late winter into spring 'Red Lady' bears wine-red, buttercup-shaped flowers on strong stems above substantial clumps of shiny, leathery, jaggedly hand-shaped evergreen leaves. The fresh lime-green new leaves appear with the blooms.
Hellebores prefer a rich, loamy, neutral to alkaline soil, and some protection from sun and drying winds. They often self-sow to form large colonies. Combine them with shade-loving bulbs, evergreen ferns, perennials and shrubs. Unlike many plants that bloom at this time of year, deer don't bother them.
