HELLEBORUS x hybridus
Hybrid Lenten Rose
A group of hybrids of the Lenten rose, Helleborus orientalis, these semi-evergreen perennials make outstanding additions to the perennial garden. From winter into spring they bear buttercup-shaped flowers above substantial clumps of shiny, leathery, jaggedly hand-shaped leaves. Many single and double-flowered cultivars are available including selections with pink, green, pale yellow, or purple flowers. Bicolored forms with picotee, spotted, and other color patterns are also available.
Hellebores prefer a rich, loamy, neutral to alkaline soil, and some protection from sun and drying winds. Unlike many plants that bloom at this time of year, deer don't bother them.
