HELLEBORUS x nigercors 'Honeyhill Joy'
Honeyhill Joy Lenten Rose, Hybrid Lenten Rose
This entry has yet to be reviewed and approved by L2G editors.
Showy late winter to early spring flowers and handsome evergreen foliage make this hybrid of Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) a valuable addition to the shady perennial garden. The white to greenish-white buttercup-shaped flowers appear on leafy overwintering stems above lusty clumps of shiny, leathery, jaggedly hand-shaped leaves. The flowers are sometimes pink-tinged. The dark-green leaves may have toothed edges and silvery veins.
Hellebores prefer a rich, loamy, neutral to alkaline soil, and some protection from sun and drying winds. They often self-sow to form large colonies. Combine them with shade-loving bulbs, evergreen ferns, perennials and shrubs. Unlike many plants that bloom at this time of year, deer don't bother them.
