Every very early summer, the Adorable Tiger daylily captures you as prey because of its alluring red and gold flowers that happen to be scented. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. The hybrid tetraploid ‘Adorable Tiger' produces 5-inch-wide (12 cm) flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. The petal-like tepals are golden yellow and are ruffled at their edges. The three central tepals are edged in red (or dark orange-red) and have a wide red band across them. The flower throat is again golden yellow. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy deep green leaves that die back once fall frosts return. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning but shrivels up well before being 24-hours old. George Rasmussen bred 'Adorable Tiger', which was released in 1998.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
