Aerial Appliqué Daylily, Daylily

When blooming in mid- to late spring, the Aerial Appliqué daylily is striking in form, size, bi-coloration and even slight fragrance! The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. The hybrid tetraploid ‘Aerial Appliqué' produces 6-inch-wide (13 cm) flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. The petal-like tepals are muted lavender. The three central tepals are wavy-edged while the outer three are more like wide ribbons. The flower throat is light yellow, and juts outward into the lavender to create a jagged-edge star design. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy deep green leaves that remain semi-evergreen across the winter months. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning but shrivels up well before being 24-hours old. Floridian Ludlow Lambertson bred 'Aerial Appliqué', which was released in 2006. This variety will rebloom several weeks later.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
