HEMEROCALLIS 'Apple Tart'

Lynn Batdorf, The United States National Arboretum

Family

Liliaceae

Botanical Name

HEMEROCALLIS 'Apple Tart'

Plant Common Name

Apple Tart Daylily, Daylily

General Description

The daylily is a reliable perennial that everyone knows and loves. The flowers of the early to midsummer-blooming ‘Apple Tart’ are clear red with light red midribs and yellow-green throats. They are nocturnal (night blooming) and triangular in shape. Nocturnal daylily blooms open late in the afternoon and are open though out the night. Later in the season they may re-bloom, especially if deadheaded. The flowers are borne from neat clumps of bright green strap-like leaves that require some cold for dormancy.

All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Their clumps spread over time and need to be divided every three to four years. Otherwise, they require little care, though it is good to cut their foliage back if it starts to look worn in midsummer. Enjoy them in mixed beds, borders, containers and large mass plantings.
