HEMEROCALLIS 'Autumn Carnival'
Autumn Carnival Daylily, Daylily

Bold, salmon-red and pale peach-salmon flowers with greenish yellow throats bedeck the Autumn Carnival daylily. This hybrid cultivar blooms in early to midsummer, and reblooms again several weeks later in very late summer or autumn. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. 'Autumn Carnival' was bred by North Carolinians Bill and Linda Gluck, and introduced in 2008.
This hybrid tetraploid produces 5-inch-wide (12 cm) flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. Each petal-like tepal has a yellow base that turns salmon-red farther out, and finally pastel peach-salmon at the edges. The tepals also may reflex or have slightly wavy edges. The scapes rise from clumps of strappy green leaves that persist through the winter months. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning, but shrivels up before being 24-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
