Bolshoi Daylily, Daylily

Massive, pastel flowers that occur over a rather long, extended summertime period are a few attributes of the Bolshoi daylily. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. In early to midsummer, the hybrid tetraploid ‘Bolshoi’ produces fragrant flowers atop a naked stem called a scape. The six ruffled-edge, petal-like tepals are light peach with hints of light yellow and pale pink throughout. The flower's throat is green. Flowers open during the day and rise from tall clumps of strappy green leaves that die back once fall frosts occur. Each blossom in the bud cluster lasts no more than 24 hours before shriveling up. In ideal growing conditions, this cultivar is known to produce an encore flowering display several weeks later.
'Bolshoi' was bred by Steve Moldovan and introduced in 1976. Soon afterward it obtained an award of merit from the American Hemerocallis Society. Then it won a honorable mention award in the 1979 running for the Stout Silver Medal, which is the highest honor given to daylilies bestowed by the AHS.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
