The ornateness of the Champagne and Caviar daylily's flower evokes a sense of high society and expensive taste. The ruffled edges and contrasting peach and violet tones are visually stunning. The daylily is a popular perennial revered for its reliability, ease of growth and floral beauty. John Peat bred 'Champagne and Caviar', which was released in 2001. Depending on climate, it blooms most heavily in late spring or early summer with a smaller reblooming cycle several weeks later.
This hybrid tetraploid daylily produces 6-inch-wide (15 cm) flowers atop a branching naked stem called a scape. All six petal-like tepals are creamy peach. The three central tepals are larger and tightly ruffled-edged in reddish violet. Just above the greenish yellow throat is a smeared band of red-violet that creates an "eye." The scapes rise from clumps of strappy deep green leaves that die back each winter. Each blossom in the bud cluster opens in the morning but shrivels up well before reaching 24-hours old.
Daylilies are clump-forming and spread slowly via rhizomes. The blooms are commonly held in branched clusters on long leafless stems that stand above the foliage. All daylilies are easy to grow if provided full to partial sun and average soil with good drainage. Deciduous daylilies are the hardiest and survive in the coldest reaches of their range; however they may struggle in areas with mild winters. Evergreen types grow well in all but the most tropical regions but require protection where winters are harsh and cold. Their clumps spread over time and may need to be divided every three to four years. After plants bloom, it is wise to shear back their foliage to allow for a fresh flush of growth.
