General Description

A wild species of daylily used as a parent for many modern hybrids, the citron daylily is beautifully elegant on its own accord. Native to China, Japan and Korea, this herbaceous perennial grows into a clump of tuberous roots and long, arching green leaves (much like that of a grass). In early to midsummer, tall flower stems - called scapes - tower above the mound of foliage. The scape tip bears numerous flower buds that open in the early evening, remain open overnight and then close by midday. Six petal-like tepals comprise the flower, which may measure up to 6-inches (15 cm) in diameter. Each lemon-scented blossom lasts no more than 24 hours. Plants die back to their roots once autumn frosts return.

Grow citron daylily in any fertile soil that is average to well-drained. Full sun promotes the best flowering display, but partial shade is acceptable. Cut off the old flowers to tidy the flower clusters, and cut back the scapes once the season is over. Plant the daylily in a mixed border or meadow or massed as a tall, billowy groundcover.
